Lifting large loads - showcasing the world’s largest wheel loaders

9,400+ wheel loaders sold in two years

Ritchie Bros. has sold more than 9,400 wheel loaders in the past two years, including the big 2018 Caterpillar 980M pictured above, which sold for CA$550,000 (US$414,000 approx.) at a live auction in Saskatoon, SK. This massive dirt moving machine stands approximately 12.5 feet tall, has a 425-horsepower engine, and max bucket capacity of 5.25-16.0 cubic yards (4.2-12.2 m³). Yet, as big as the Cat 980M is, it's nowhere near as big as the large looming loaders below.

Komatsu P&H L-2350

The L-2350 is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest wheel loader. Originally manufactured by the Texas-based company LeTourneau Technologies, the L-2350 is now part of the Komatsu product line. It has an operating capacity of 160,000 lbs (72,5674 kg), a 2,300-horsepower engine, and stands 22 ft (6.7 m) tall.

Komatsu P&H L-1850

Also originally a LeTourneau machine, the Komatsu P&H L-1850 has an operating capacity of 120,000 lbs (53,431 kg) and can center load haulage trucks with payload ratings ranging from 240 to 360 tons. The L-1850 has a 2,000-horsepower engine.

Caterpillar 994K

The 994K is Caterpillar's largest wheel loader on the market today. This massive machine has a 1,739-horsepower Cat 3516E engine, an operating weight of 534,852 lbs (242,604 kg), and a bucket capacity of 25-32 cubic yards (19-24 m³).

Caterpillar 993K

The Caterpillar 993K is the 994K's little brother, but is still very powerful, with a 973-horsepower Cat C32 engine. It has an operating weight of 294,687 lbs (133,668 kg approx.) and has a bucket capacity of 16-31 cubic yards (12.2-23.7 m³).

Glenn Fuqua construction sell more than 100 items in Houston

Respected Texas construction company chooses Ritchie Bros.

Ritchie Bros.' recent Houston auction was a smashing success for Glenn Fuqua, Inc. The well-respected Texas construction company sold close to 100 items, including pulvimixers, excavators, wheel loaders and more.

"The auction went very well for us—we were pleased with the equipment prices and the way all the Ritchie Bros. employees handled our business. We couldn't be happier," said Glenn. "I've been working with Ritchie Bros. for decades and have become very good friends with some of their employees. I've been in the highway construction business for 46 years would not hesitate to recommend Ritchie Bros. to any contractor. They are outstanding!"

More than 5,300 equipment items were sold in Houston for US$45+ million. More than 7,250 people registered to bid in the two-day auction, including 5,850+ registering to participate online. U.S. buyers purchased approximately 88 percent of the equipment, including 47 percent purchased by Texas buyers, while international buyers from such countries as Australia, Germany, and Vietnam purchased 12 percent of the equipment. Online buyers purchased 61 percent of the assets.

Built from the ground up.

Glenn Fuqua built his company from the ground up starting with just a dump truck and a shovel. That was back in 1973, and since then he’s poured his heart into a company that now handles projects for the State of Texas as big as $12 million.

Now nearing 70, Glenn’s goal is to reduce his workload and that means a sizable fleet realignment and taking on smaller projects. With over 100 items to sell, he trusted in Ritchie Bros. once again to get him the best returns. Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers has served him well in the past and its local territory managers have always had good relationships with Glenn.

Congratulations to Bill Ward of Puyallup, Washington – our US winner. Bill, who runs Active Construction Inc. in nearby Tacoma, is a longtime Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers customer who regularly buys and sells heavy equipment at our Chehalis, WA auction site. In fact, he's transacted over a million dollars worth of equipment over time with Ritchie Bros.!

When we contacted Bill, he said it was "awesome" to win and that he was "super-excited" to claim his prize. Judging by the photos we took of Bill and our Territory Managers in Chehalis all aboard the Kubota, we're inclined to believe him.

Canadian winners say a dream has come true

North of the border, our Canadian winners are Clarke and Diana Smith out of Winlaw, BC. Congratulations to Clarke and Diana! Winlaw is in the province's Slocan Valley and boasts a population of about 400 folks!

"Awesome! I don't think I've ever won anything," said Clarke over the phone when we contacted him. "I'm 63 now and boy it's been a dream of mine to have a side-by-side for ages. I am not kidding you!"

Clarke and Diana are what you might call old-school. The couple mailed in their entry and needed some assistance from their daughter when it came time to email a document needed to complete the prize transaction.

"We don't even have cell service," said Clarke with a laugh. "But we were going to make this happen."

Pulvimixers, excavators, wheel loaders and more

The company will be selling 100 construction equipment pieces in the upcoming Houston unreserved auction on August 20. The consignment package includes: 2014 Bomag RS446D pulvimixer, 2012 Volvo EC250EL hydraulic excavator, 2016 Broce CR350 broom, 2013 Volvo SD100D vibratory rollers, wheel loaders, motor graders, a 2014 Freightliner 108SD 2000 Gallon S/A asphalt distributor truck and more.

"Everything is pretty well new, from 2012 or newer," said Daphne. "Everything he keeps updated and well-maintained."

Ritchie Bros.' Houston auction was a smashing success, selling more than 5,300 equipment items for US$45+ million, and Glenn Fuqua was very happy with the results for his consignment package.

1. 2018 John Deere 9520R 4WD tractor - $435,000

We sold thousands of farm-related equipment items in July. The biggest ticket item of the month was this 2018 John Deere 9520R 4WD tractor (Lot 53) sold at our on-the-farm auction in Melville, SK for CA$435,000 (US$331,000 approx.). The tractor was sold to an onsite buyer right from Melville.

2. 2017 John Deere S680 combine - $390,000

Also sold in Melville, SK, this 2017 John Deere S680 combine (Lot 55) hit CA$390,000 (US$297,000 approx.) before the auctioneer yelled “SOLD!”

3. 2016 Versatile 450DR track tractor - $305,000

More than 100 consignors sold equipment in our Brandon, MB auction on July 25. The most popular item of the day was this 2016 Versatile 450DT track tractor (Lot 113) that sold for CA$305,000 (US$232,000 approx.) to an online buyer from Saskatchewan.

4. 2016 Seed Hawk XL series 70-ft air drill - $300,000

Back to Melville, where this 2016 Seed Hawk XL series 70-ft air drill (Lot 49) sold for CA$300,000 (US$229,000 approx.). This one-day, on-the-farm auction attracted more than 1,000 bidders from 21 countries, but this air drill sold to another buyer from Melville.

5. 2013 Case IH Steiger 600 quadtrac track tractor - $267,500

On July 12 we sold 650+ items for 140+ consignors at our site in Regina, SK, including this 2013 Case IH Steiger 600 quadtrac track tractor (Lot 74) that sold for CA$267,500 (US$204,000 approx.) to an online buyer from Manitoba.

With all the snow in Ontario during the winter it's no wonder these 2017 Volvo plow trucks were in high demand at our Toronto auction on July 10. Lots 93-96 sold for a combined CA$865,000 (US$660,000 approx.) to a Canadian buyer.

2. 2018 Kenworth T800 dump truck – CA$175,000

At the same Toronto auction this 2018 Kenworth T800 dump truck (lot 41) sold for CA$175,000 (US$133,000 approx.)

3. 2009 International 7600 SBA Workstar Tri/A hydro vac truck – CA$145,000

This 2009 International 7600 SBA Workstar Tri/A hydro vac truck (lot 31) pulled in CA$145,000 (US$110,000 approx.) at the July Toronto auction.

4. 2018 Kenworth W900 sleeper truck tractor (T/A) – US$97,000

Our Fort Worth, TX auction on July 17 was the location of our big-ticket truck tractor of the month – this 2018 Kenworth W900 (lot 837) sold for US$97,000.

5. 4 X 2018 Freightliner CA12 sleeper truck tractors – $480,000

Up in Montreal, QUE, on July 12, we sold four 2018 Freightliner CA125s (lots 82-85) for CA$120,000 each (approx. US$91,659 each).

Close to 3,200 items were sold in our latest Fort Worth, TX auction on July 16 – 17, including this 2018 Komatsu WA500-8 wheel loader (Lot 1040) that sold for US$340,000 to an onsite buyer from Austin, TX.

2. 2014 Caterpillar D8T dozer - ¥31,500,000

This 2014 Caterpillar D8T dozer (Lot 88) was sold at our Narita, Japan auction on July 2 for ¥31,500,000 (approx. US$293,000) to an online buyer from Australia.

3. 2016 Caterpillar 980M wheel loader – $360,000

We sold a couple of nice Caterpillar 980M wheel loaders (Lot 289 – 290) in our Montreal, QC auction in July. The one pictured above sold for CA$370,000 (approx. US$283,000), while the other sold for CA$360,000 (approx. US$275,000).

4. 2001 Caterpillar 345BL UHD ultra high reach demolition excavator - $330,000

With an 80-foot, four-section, three-piece boom, this 2001 Cat 345BL high reach demolition excavator (Lot 976) sold for CA$330,000 (approx. US$252,000) to an onsite buyer in our latest Toronto, ON auction.

5. 2014 Caterpillar 730 6x6 articulated dump truck - $205,000

Our last auction of July was at our site in North Franklin, CT. Close to 1,200 items were sold in the unreserved auction, including this 2014 Caterpillar 730 6x6 articulated dump truck (Lot 259) that sold for US$205,000. An additional two 730 6x6s were sold in the auction as well—both for US$180,000 each.

Mammoet PTC 200-DS ring crane

This massive PTX-200-DS ring crane from the Dutch company Mammoet has a lift capacity of 5,000 tons! Ring cranes are true heavyweights in the crane industry. They have a long reach, small footprint, flexible configuration and quick mobilization.

Demag CC8800-1 Twin lattice boom crawler crane

Manufactured in Germany, the Demag CC 8800-1 TWIN lattice boom crawler crane has a maximum lifting capacity of 3,200 tons.

Liebherr 13000 crawler crane

The Liebherr LR 13000 has a max lift capacity of 3,000 tons and is primarily used in power plant construction. It’s the only crane of its class that can operate without a derrick ballast, which is made possible by a slewing ring.

Manitowoc 31000 crawler crane

The 31000 is the largest capacity crawler crane ever designed by Manitowoc, with a lift capacity of 2,500+ tons. Utilizing its innovative variable position counterweight system, the 31000 requires minimal footprint and ground preparation.

Lampson LTL-2600 Transi-Lift

The Lampson Transi-Lift® 2600 has a max lifting capacity of 2,600 tons. Its Transi-Lift® System is a patented configuration that combines the heavy lifting capacities of stiff leg derricks and ring-mounted lift equipment with the mobility of a conventional crawler crane.

1. 2014 Kenworth C500 T/A T/A 385-in. bed truck – CA$275,000

With its third auction of the year, Ritchie Bros.’ Edmonton team sold CA$72+ million (US$54+ million) of equipment. Among the 7,400+ items in the three-day June event was this 2014 Kenworth C500 T/A T/A 385-in. bed truck (lot #649) that sold for CA$275,000 (approx. US$205,000) to an online buyer from Calgary, AB.

2. 2016 Mack GU713 Tri/A roll-off truck – US$145,000

We held a number of big events in June 2019, but none bigger than our massive US$93+ million auction in Columbus, OH. One of the transportation highlights of the event was this 2016 Mack GU713 Tri/A roll-off truck (lot #1464) that sold for US$145,000 to an onsite buyer from New Jersey.

Ritchie Bros. sold a ton of big-ticket agricultural equipment items at its auctions this spring, including this 2017 John Deere S680 combine (lot #76). Sold at our site in North Battleford, SK on June 25, this S680 sold to an online buyer from Great Plains, MB for CA$355,000 (approx. US$269,000). It was the most expensive ag item sold in June.

2. 2015 John Deere R4045 120-foot high-clearance sprayer – CA$345,000

The day after the North Battleford auction, Ritchie Bros. made its way over to Wymark, SK for an on-the-farm auction for Sass Enterprises Ltd. The top item in the auction was this 2015 John Deere R4045 120-foot high-clearance sprayer (lot #61) that sold for CA$345,000 (approx. US$261,000) to an onsite buyer from Rockyford, SK.

3. 2018 Morris C2 Contour 61-foot air drill – CA$292,500

Earlier in June, Ritchie Bros. conducted an auction for Rene and Karen Gauthier of Renkar Enterprises Ltd. on their property in Rosthern, SK. More than 50 items were sold in the sale, including this 2018 Morris C2 Contour 61-foot air drill (lot #30) that sold for CA$292,500 (approx. US$219,000) to an onsite buyer from Porcupine Plain, SK.

4. 2016 John Deere 9620R auto load scraper special 4WD tractor – 3 sold for US$215,000 each

Our June two-day Los Angeles, CA auction featured some high-quality agricultural equipment, including three 2016 John Deere 9620R auto load scraper special 4WD tractors (lot #s 177 – 179)that sold for US$215,000 each. Two of the tractors were sold to an online bidder in Texas; the other sold to an online bidder in Washington State.

5. 2017 John Deere T670 combine – CA$272,500

We sold more than 380 agricultural equipment items in our June 13 – 14 auction in Saskatoon, SK. The most expensive ag item in the auction was this 2017 John Deere T670 combine (lot #57) that sold for CA$272,500 (approx. US$205,000). Three more T670s were also sold in the auction, for CA$252,500; CA$232,500; and CA$185,000 respectively.

June was a busy month at Ritchie Bros., capped off by our massive Columbus, OH auction - the pipeline construction event of the year. It was our largest-ever two-day auction with US$93+ million of equipment sold! Among the items sold were 12 Caterpillar PL87 pipelayers (lot #s 127-138) that sold for US$750,000 each, for a combined US$9 million, to a buyer from the U.K.

2. 2016 Caterpillar D8T dozer – US$495,000

Dozers were also big sellers at our Columbus, OH auction. This 2016 Caterpillar D8T (lot #61) sold for US$495,000 to a U.S. buyer.

US$93+ million of equipment sold at our Columbus, OH auction June 27-28, 2019.

Last week, we held the pipeline construction event of the year in Columbus, OH, selling more than 5,000 items for US$93+ million over two days. The big highlight of the event: 138 pipelayers sold for US$45+ million in just two hours!

The June 27–28 Columbus auction attracted 5,000+ bidders from 56 countries, including 4,000+ online bidders. U.S. buyers purchased approximately 80 percent of the equipment in the auction, while international buyers from as far away as Australia, Taiwan, and Cameroon purchased 20 percent. Online buyers purchased 48 percent of the equipment.

"Bringing the global pipeline construction industry together and selling US$93 million of assets, including $45 million of pipelayers in just two hours, is quite the feat," said Jeff Jeter, President, Upstream & Emerging Businesses, Ritchie Bros. "Our events bring the equipment world together like no other. The auction may have been in Columbus—in fact, it was the site's largest auction ever—but the equipment came from 372 owners around the United States and sold to buyers all over the world."

Sales highlights in the two-day Columbus auction included 30 Caterpillar PL83 pipelayers that sold for a combined US$18.5+ million and 12 Caterpillar PL87 pipelayers that sold for a combined US$9 million—both models have never been sold at auction before—and 17 Caterpillar D8T dozers that sold for a combined US$4.9+ million. All items in the auction were sold without minimum bids or reserve prices.

Approximately 1,800 of the items in the auction were sold as part of a complete dispersal for Welded Construction LP, an Ohio-based company that recently closed after more than 50 years in business.

"This was a unique package of equipment—some of these assets have never been sold at auction before, and still Ritchie Bros. was able to get the right buying audience there on auction day," said Steve Hawkins, CEO of Welded Construction. "Ritchie Bros. and Gordon Brothers know how to market equipment and create the excitement needed to bring results."

Ritchie Bros. sold the Welded Construction equipment package in partnership with Gordon Brothers, a global advisory, restructuring, and investment firm. "This was a special sale for all of us who had the privilege to represent Welded as we brought its best-in-class fleet to the world market," said Jim Burke, Managing Director, Gordon Brothers. "The results were outstanding."

One of the buyers in the Columbus auction was Jim Prince of Prince Pipeline & Integrity, LLC. "Ritchie Bros. always goes the extra mile and this auction was no exception—great selection and brilliantly organized," said Jim Prince. "Welded Construction were well-known in the industry for taking great care of their equipment, so I'm not surprised by the strong prices on auction day. Heavy equipment dealer finds success - and convenience - selling on Marketplace-E

Roland Machinery Co. turned to Ritchie Bros.' online marketplace to move inventory.

Roland Machinery Co., a busy U.S. Komatsu dealership with 17 locations serving a wide variety of customers in five mid-western states, found itself with some surplus used inventory that wasn't getting the visibility they wanted.

Jay Germann, Used Equipment Manager for Roland Machinery, thought Ritchie Bros.' online equipment marketplace, Marketplace-E, offered them the ability to reach buyers they might not normally reach.

"We thought there are probably others out there that are looking to buy in another way, and we can hit on them through Marketplace-E. We did a few of them (Marketplace-E sales) and it worked!"

Jay considered other sales channels and various forms of specialty advertising for the inventory, but after consulting with his Ritchie Bros. rep, felt that "Marketplace-E looked like something that would work. I liked the way the platform looked and I thought customers would enjoy buying that way."

And what did Jay like best about the platform? Being able to control the deal; being able to set a price and then giving a customer the option to buy it now or make an offer. With Marketplace-E offering sellers a choice of buying formats, Jay used both to achieve successful sales: "It worked out great. We were highly impressed with it." Equipment that Roland sold via Marketplace-E included a Wirtgen W2100 milling machine, a Sennebogen 835M material handler, a Komatsu PC490LC-10 excavator, and a Komatsu D61PX-23 dozer.

Roland Machinery also benefitted from Marketplace-E's ability to allow sellers to sell equipment where it sits. Says Jay, "One of the pieces that we sold – I think that the buyer actually paid a little bit more because he was able to come to our location and see that we're the real deal. He was able to come to our yard, get in the seat, operate the machine and check it over. He said: 'I'll take it,' and the deal was done.

"We have our own customers, but Marketplace-E brings a whole different type of buyer to the table that we wouldn't see – the type of guy who's too busy working during the day. He gets home at night, gets his iPad out and looks for equipment. It's easier for him to point and click. I like that."

Our upcoming unreserved auction in Narita, Japan on July 2 is shaping up to be our largest-ever in terms of the number of equipment items that will be selling. The week beginning July 1st is what's known as “auction week” in Japan, and Ritchie Bros.' Narita event is the first for the week.

With a wide variety of equipment available from brands such as Caterpillar, Komatsu, Kubota, Hitachi, Takeuchi and Mitsubishi – including 87 EPA-compliant machines – it's an exciting opportunity for North American buyers to get some top-quality gear. The lineup also includes a large variety of late-model, low-hour equipment.

One of the major consignors at the Narita auction is Nippon Caterpillar. Other consignors include Kanamoto, Kubota Kenki, and Mitsui Sumitomo Finance.

Utah contractors work with Ritchie Bros. to sell equipment package

Customer opts for IronPlanet weekly auction to sell equipment where it sits.

Associated Brigham Contractors is celebrating 60 years in 2019—starting from humble beginnings and growing into one of the largest contractors in the state of Utah. Specializing in structural concrete work for industrial mills, ABC has jobs, employees, and equipment all over the United States.

ABC has sold equipment with Ritchie Bros. several times over the years, but only ever one or two pieces at a time. This year, the company was looking to do a fleet realignment and wanted to sell 29 pieces of surplus equipment—everything from loaders and excavators to compaction equipment and dump trucks.

Given their prior positive experience working with Ritchie Bros. and the rapport they quickly developed with Ritchie Bros. sales rep Cody Eck, they decided to sell the equipment with them.

“The equipment we were looking to sell was spread across Utah. It was big gear that would require dozens of transport loads to the closest Ritchie Bros. auction site, which was more than an hour away,” said Wendy Smith, Accounting Clerk for ABC. “Cody explained the IronPlanet online auction solution and it seemed like the best option for us. Our equipment wouldn’t need to be transported and we would still be selling it to buyers around the world.”

‘He made us feel important, like we were his only client.’

The equipment was cleaned up and prepped for sale at ABC’s headquarters in Brigham City, Utah. Ritchie Bros.’ equipment inspection team came to ABC to do their inspections and get photos of all the items for the IronPlanet website. All the equipment was set to sell in IronPlanet’s weekly featured auction on May 9 and a special preview event was held at ABC’s headquarters ahead of the auction for anyone who wanted to check out the equipment in person.

“The Ritchie Bros. team took care of everything. They set up the preview event and a branded webpage for all our items to make them easier to find and inspect online,” said Wendy. “The team was professional, experienced and knowledgeable—they were able to perceive my needs before I even knew I had them. Usually there is some glitch the first time you try something new, but they appear to have worked out the bugs over the years.”

On auction day, ABC’s 29 items received a staggering 1,300+ bids from around the world. Sales highlights included a 2016 Komatsu PC360LC-11 excavator that sold for US$170,000, a 2014 Peterbilt 367 quad-axle dump truck that sold for US$131,000, and a 2018 Komatsu WA270-8 wheel loader that sold for US$129,000.

“We are pleased with the results and the process of working with the Ritchie Bros. team was excellent,” said Wendy. “Our sales rep Cody was very responsive. He made us feel important, like we were his only client. He took care of everything, so we could just focus on our business.”
